Rental insurance

Outpost is a catalog, not an insurer — here's how to make sure a rental is properly covered.

Owners: check your policy first

Confirm with your insurer that renting the item out is permitted. Vehicles, heavy plant, and short-let housing usually need a commercial or hire endorsement. State clearly in your listing what cover you carry and what the renter is responsible for.

Renters: three things to verify

Whether the owner's policy covers you while the item is in your possession, whether your own home, auto, or business policy extends to rented equipment, and the excess you'd pay on a claim. Get the answers in writing before pickup.

Deposits

A deposit is not insurance — it's a small buffer against minor damage. Agree the amount, the conditions for its return, and the return deadline before money changes hands.

If you need to claim

Use your pickup and return photos as evidence, notify the other party the same day, then contact the relevant insurer. Email safety@outpost.example if you need booking records, or contact us.
